Starting Off: Concealer
Foundation takes a lot of the credit but it's often the trusty concealer that does the hard work! It hides our spots, scars, shadows plus areas of pigmentation - and there are 3 different types to choose from:
Opaque Coverage: This offers full coverage and is often packaged in stick or pallet form. As a rule opaque coverage concealers will hide everything but as consequence is thick in consistency. For this reason the product needs to be blended really well to avoid patching and prevent flaking during wear.
Light Reflecting: A little thinner than the latter, occasionally comes in click-packaging and is best for hiding those pesky shadows. When applied around the eye's they'll look flawlessly refreshed due to the products brightening properties. You do have to be careful though, as a camera flash plus light reflecting particles can equal some disastrous results - just ask Nicole Kidman!
Colour Correcting: How bizarre to blend a purple or green product on your face? But there's a method to the madness and it's all about your blood! Prior to blood being exposed to oxygen it is a vibrant shade of blue and through our translucent skin (usually around the eye area where skin is thinner) it creates a slightly different tone compared to the rest of the face.
Colour correcting concealers help neutralise under eye darkness giving you a more even tone. To discover what colour correcting shade is right for your skin, take a look at the chart below and go with the shade directly opposite the shade that reflects the natural colour of the area surrounding your eyes.
Mine is a mild yellow-orange, so a blue-violet corrector would be best for me.
My all time favourite is YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch. Fortunately spots are not mostly not an issue for me so a lighter concealer is sufficient for my everyday need. As this is probably one for the Christmas list, H&M's sister store '...And Other Stories' offer a brilliant dupe for a fraction of the price. You can read my full review of it here.
When I do suffer the occasional break out or have been missing my sleep I depend on my Benefit Boi-ing which markets itself as an industrial strength cover up. It gives great opaque coverage and is quite thick to apply, but does glide on surprisingly effortlessly. I find using my finger as an applicator means I can pat it in gently for a more flawless finish.
Finally, if you scour any beauty blog it won't be long before you stumble across rave reviews of Collection's Lasting Perfection - and well deserved they are too! The drug store offering has great coverage that lasts all day without any flaking. If there is one budget busting concealer you rush out to buy then Collection's should definitely be it. The only down side is there are currently only four shades which limits it's suitability for all. Having said that it is definitely the best High Street concealer currently on the market, with Rimmel's Wake Me Up a close second.
Do you have a favourite brand or type of concealer that you swear by? What colour correcting shade do you use or would you need?
